LibreOffice’s 5.1 update added support for Windows 10. An unofficial version of LibreOffice was recently uploaded to the Microsoft Store, but now doesn’t show up if searched directly in the store. It’s still available via LibreOffice’s site, though.

While the version of LibreOffice that was available through the Microsoft Store isn’t official, it’s a quality software suite that begs the question, Is it worth switching from Microsoft Office?
I’ve used Microsoft Office since Windows 95. But I decided to take a look at LibreOffice after it arrived in the Microsoft Store. It’s impressed me, though it’s viability as an office suite depends largely on your setup.

Here are some reasons why you should choose LibreOffice over Microsoft Office, and some reasons why you shouldn’t.

LibreOffice is available for free on Windows 10, Mac, and Linux through Libre Office’s website.

Reason to switch: Value

The first thing that catches the eye about LibreOffice is the price tag, or more specifically the lack of one. LibreOffice originally forked off of OpenOffice and has been regularly maintained and developed over the years. It’s one of the best free office suites of applications around and has programs for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. It is a versatile and powerful set of programs, though it’s worth noting that it emulates the older core set of apps from Microsoft Office and doesn’t have equivalents to newer programs like OneNote.

While there are many word processors and cheap or free programs that try to deliver a full office setup, Libre Office is one of the most comprehensive. Its wide range of apps tackles the vast majority of office-related workflows. And it does all of this for free.

It supports open formats that allow you to use documents from other programs so you don’t have to isolate yourself or your workflow into a Libre Office world.

The value of LibreOffice is truly impressive. It’s practically an advertisement for the open source community because of how great of an app you can legally get for free.

Reason to switch: Dedicated developers

While LibreOffice is free, it’s not some half-hearted project. It’s regularly maintained and updated to support the latest versions of Windows 10. The suite can also be expanded with extensions to add more power and versatility.

While that might not seem like a big deal, some apps that are built to replicate or directly compete with big names fall away and become abandonware. LibreOffice released updates in the last few months to both its “Still” and “Fresh” branches. Because of this, you don’t need to worry about LibreOffice falling away. All indicators show that it is alive and well and won’t go anywhere anytime soon. Even if it did, you wouldn’t have to worry because your documents would be in open formats.

Reasons NOT to switch: Cloud limitations

One of the biggest areas these two suites diverge is in how they approach online and cross-platform workflows. Microsoft invests heavily in the cloud to let you open and save documents anywhere you’d like. It also focuses on having apps on a variety of hardware, ranging from computers to tablets and phones. LibreOffice is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, but iOS and Android are limited to viewing files only unless you turn on experimental features.

If you need to save something on one device and jump to another and continue editing, you’ll be better served by Microsoft Office. You can do online editing with things such as Collabora and ownCloud, but that’s more complicated to set up than just signing into your Microsoft account. Microsoft Office also handles collaboration from multiple editors better than LibreOffice.

Much like the rest of this comparison, how much this affects you will vary. I use a personal PC, work MacBook, work iPad, and personal Android phone. I use Office Online often and use two different OneDrive accounts for work and personal use. So, for me, these features are essential, and I could never switch away from Microsoft Office. But you could have a completely different workflow that would be great for you centered on using LibreOffice on select devices and saving them onto a cloud like Dropbox.

So should you switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice?

Deciding to switch to LibreOffice over Microsoft Office is largely dependent on your specific workflow. While LibreOffice obviously is a better value because you’re getting something for free, that isn’t a factor to someone who already is happy to pay for Office 365 for things like OneDrive storage or someone that gets Office 365 through their workplace or school.

Comparing the feature sets of the two suites is more complicated. It isn’t as simple as saying that one is better. If you scroll through this page comparing the feature sets you’ll see that the suites alternate in terms of which is better from section to section. For example, LibreOffice lets you insert more items such as vector graphics and FLAC audio, but Microsoft Office has better touch support and better cross-platform collaboration features. My advice in terms of features it to browse through each suite and see which fits your personal needs best.

LibreOffice is impressive, and because it’s free you can try it out while still paying for Microsoft Office. My advice is that if you’re interested, give it a try while keeping your Office 365 subscription and then make a more permanent decision. Ultimately, LibreOffice could save you some significant cash.

How to record computer screen using Microsoft office

Sometimes entrepreneurs, lecturers, news researchers, support staff, or instructors find themselves in a situation where the best and a more fashionable way to describe a problem or idea would be in actual-time using video recording. This can be done effectively on Windows operating systems using Microsoft Office – PowerPoint-2013 and later.

The screen-recording software available in Microsoft Office Setup PowerPoint-2013 and later enables users to record actions on their computer desktop – together with the related sound, and then put it on a presentation slide, or even save it as an independent file to use in another program. This can help individuals greatly especially when demonstrating realistic information more clearly to other people.

Before you can start recording screen actions on your computer and listen with an associated sound, you need to make sure that you have sufficient storage space to enable it to record and save.

Additionally, you need basic computer hardware like the microphone, sound card and speakers to make everything work successfully.

This article shows how you can capture screen actions in form of video and use it in your Microsoft Office presentation or even store the video as a separate file in your computer system.

Steps To Use Microsoft Office office PowerPoint-2013 and Later To Record a Video of Screen.

Please note that in order to use this feature in PowerPoint-2013, you will need to install the update available on this link: ( https://www.support.microsoft.com//en-us//help//2956149//february-16-2015-update-for-powerpoint-2013-kb2956149//). For the newer versions, you don’t need to install any update to use the new screen-recording feature.

Please open the PowerPoint presentation file you want to add a screen-recording and follow the steps below:

  1. With your PowerPoint file open, select the slide you want to put the screen-recording on.
  2. Using your mouse, place the cursor on the ?Insert’ tab and click on it. On this tab, move your cursor, and select and click on ?Screen Recording’.
  3. A control-doc setting for screen-recording will appear. Now click where it says ?Select Area’ or use the 'WinKey+Shift+A' combinations keys as a shortcut. (By default, the size of the area you can record is 64 × 64 Px).

Here, click and drag the cross-sign cursor that appears so as to select the screen-area where you want to capture a video.

Note: Your previous selection area appears on screen if you had done screen-recording using PowerPoint before. So you can continue with your recording or start-over again by clicking ?Select Area’ Additionally, you can choose to deselect the ?Record Pointer’ and ?Audio’ options if you don’t want PowerPoint to use mouse-pointer and audio automatically.

  1. Now, click ?Record’ or use the windows combination-keys 'Win–Key+Shift+R'.

Note: While recording, the control-dock will slide-up over the margin. Please pin it to the screen, or point the cursor at the top of computer-screen to make it reappear.

  1. You will need to control your screen-recording using the following actions:
  • To stop recording temporarily, click ?Pause’ or use 'Win–Key+Shift+R' keyboard shortcut.
  • To continue after a pause, click ?Record’ or use 'Win–Key+Shift+R' keyboard shortcut.
  • To finish your recording, click ?Stop’ or use 'Win–Key+Shift+R' keyboard shortcut.
  1. When you finish your recording, you need to save your PowerPoint-presentation by clicking on the ?File’ tab and then ?Save’. You can simply do this by  pressing 'Ctrl+S' on your keyboard for quick saving. Your presentation will be saved and the recording perfectly embedded on the selected slide (the slide you chose in step one).
Note: You can save your recording as an independent file. Simply right-click on the video-image (this is represented as a single-picture on the current-slide). Then select and click ?Save Media as..’. Here specify the name of the file you want to save and its location and click the ?Save’ button.
Saving Your Screen-Recording As an Independent File From Microsoft Office Power-Point

To save your recording as a separate-file in PowerPoint-2013, you need to ensure that all the required updates are installed. Ensure you have PowePoint version-15.0.4641.1001- or the latest. Moreover, you need the following additional updates:

  • KB-2883051 (Link Address: http://www.support.microsoft.com//kb//288305//)
  • KB-2883052 (Link Address: http://www.support.microsoft.com//kb//2883052//)

The above updates will enable you to save your screen-recording as an independent file that can be played without depending on your PowerPoint document. Once these updates are successfully installed, you will be able to save your recorded video as a separate file. Follow the following procedure.

  1.  Just right-click on the image on the slide (the image represents the video frame of your recording), and click the action ?Save Media as..’. Make sure that your computer storage space is sufficient to save the file. If not, delete some files to free up some space and once done, try to save the file again.

  2. Once you click the ?Save-Media-as..’ action, a dialog box requesting you to select a folder to save your file will pop-up. Write the name of your video file.

  3. Finally, click the ?Save’ button and the file will be saved successfully and separately in your computer.

By default, videos are saved using MP4-format.

Customizing the ?Start’ Settings of The Recorded Video

On the slide containing the recorded video, right-click on the recording’s video-frame and click ?Start’. Depending on your preference, choose the way you want the video to start during your presentation. This can either be automatically when a presentation slide containing the video appears, or when the video is clicked during the presentation.

Trimming The Video In Order to Suit Your Purpose

The following instructions will help you understand how to trim your video in your Microsoft Office PowerPoint-presentation. Go to the slide containing the video and do the following:

  1. Right-click on the video-image and on the box that appears, click ?Trim’.
  2. Click ?Play’ so as to find where your video-footage needs to be trimmed.
  3. When you find a point or position where you want to trim your video, click ?Pause

Note: Buttons ?NextFrame’ and ?PreviousFrame’ can help you specify accurate timing during trimming.
  • d) Either:

  • Move the green-marker (usually represents the start point of the video) using your mouse-cursor to trim-the-beginning of the video/clip. Drag the green marker to a specific start position for the clip.
  • Move the red-marker (usually represents the end-point of the video) using your mouse-cursor to trim-the-end of the video/clip. Drag the red-marker to a specific end position for the clip.
  • e) Click ?Ok’ to finish trimming the video

Applying Style to the Video-frame of Your Presentation

To apply your favorite style for your video-frame, simply right-click on the video-image and click ?Style’. Here, choose your favorite style and you will be okay with the video-frame settings.

This guide will be useful every-time you need to capture a video on your computer desktop for use in your Microsoft Office PowerPoint-presentation.
